The course consists of multiple assignments ("labs"), each covering a specific topic, for example the Border Gateway Protocol. For each of the topics, which are partly selected by a majority vote of the participants, students are taught the theoretical background and are asked to perform some practical tasks.
In the last part of the course, each team is asked to create their own small lab about a topic of their choice. This consists of both a lecture (including slides) and the actual experiments, which are entered directly into the e-learning system. |
Basic experience in the following areas is strongly recommended: - Computer networks - Working with GNU/Linux on the command line |
At the end of the module, students have a thorough understanding of selected advanced topics in the domain of computer networkings and protocols. They are capable of creating complex network configurations using both GNU/Linux and Cisco IOS. Furthermore, students have experience in the creation of teaching material. |

Assignments are done in groups of exactly two students. Our e-learning system (https://ilab2.net.in.tum.de) is used for the entire course. All labs are divided into three parts:
1. A lecture of approximately 90 minutes that gives an introduction to the topic.
2. An online self-study (which should be done at home) performed within the e-learning system as preparation for the practical part. This includes multiple choice questions students have to complete before proceeding to the practical part.
3. The practical part is also done using the e-learning system and consists of: - Setting up the lab environment (cabling, network configuration) - Performing the tasks given in the lab - Answering questions |
