Linear Algebra: Vector Spaces, Scalar Product and Norm, Basis of a Vector Space, Linear Mappings, Basis Transformations, Matrices, Determinants, Linear Equations, Eigenvalue Problems; Multidimensional Calculus: Partial Derivatives, Differentiation, Directional Derivative, Differential Operators of Vector Calculus, Critical Points, Extrema, Constrained Critical Points and Lagrange Multipliers, Line Integrals, Multiple Integrals, Change of Variables, Surface Integrals, Gauß' Theorem (Green's Theorem), Stokes' Theorem; Systems of Ordinary Differential Equations
All topics covered in the lecture Mathematical Methods in Chemistry I, including recitations.
At the end of the module students are able to describe and solve common problems from physics and chemistry via abstract vector spaces (e.g. function spaces); compute determinants; solve systems of linear equations and eigenvalue problems; evaluate expressions from vector calculus; solve multidimensional extremal value problems with our without boundary conditions; approximate multidimensional functions by Taylor expansion; transform and compute path-, volume-, and surface-integrals.

class lecture
This module consists of a lecture (3 SWS) and an accompanying recitation (1 SWS). A facultative extended recitation (1 SWS) is also offered. Lecture and presentations are employed to convey the material covered in the course. The students shall be motivated to self-study of related literature and to reflect on the topics presented. Explicit examples are discussed and selected problems are solved in small groups in the course of the recitation sessions. The individual work on accompanying exemplary homework problems aids in deepening the understanding of the topics presented in the lecture. The homework problems build in their complexity on those discussed in the recitation sessions and typically require more effort for their solution. Homework sets can be handed in for correction or checked versus provided solution sets.
