Efficient business processes and interactions between different systems and stakeholders are a cornerstone of successful digital transformation in today's enterprises. The digitalization of production and service processes, the embedding of services in a digital ecosystem and the development of new, digital communication and distribution channels are prerequisites for many companies to remain competitive in the future. At the same time, the implementation of such transformation initiatives also requires an understanding of current processes in the company as well as monitoring of the realized optimization potentials.

The Big Data Technology Process Mining enables such transparency. The technology analyses "traces" of every possible business process in the respective IT systems, reconstructs an overview of the processes actually running in the company and provides indications of problems and potential for improvement. For example, the efficiency and automation of business processes, compliance with legal requirements or the digitization of business processes can be improved.

In this seminar, teams of 5 students each conduct a case study (1 case study / team) with an industry-leading company that has introduced Process Mining for specific use cases. This lies for example in the context of a digital transformation, an M&A transaction or in the area of Industry 4.0. The goal of the seminar is to analyze application and value potentials that result from the use of Process Mining in an organizational context.
The companies have the interest to give an insight into their own transformation paths and to share their experiences regarding the application of Process Mining with the students. You and your team will consolidate these insights to derive industry-specific recommendations for action (strategies, best practices) for implementing process mining and realizing value potentials.

The seminar will be conducted together with our practice partner Celonis, originally a startup from the TUM environment and now a leading provider of process mining software. During the seminar you and your team will have the chance to report your results directly to representatives from Celonis and industry experts. The final presentation will take place at Celonis (given that the Covid-19 situation allows that), where you will have the opportunity to get to know the company better at an evening event.

The seminar is planned as a block event. Information about time and place can be found under "dates" via TUMonline.

The course will be graded based on a presentation and seminar paper.
