Exploiting the potential of quantum computers requires reformulating algorithms in the language of quantum mechanics, and making use of the superposition principle and entanglement. In quantum circuits, elementary ``gates'' are unitary matrices, and the final output quantum state has to conspire to a measurement eigenstate such that classical readout results in the desired answer with high probability. Moreover, in the current "noisy intermediate scale quantum"-era, one has to deal with practical limitations of quantum devices like decoherence over time or a limited gate fidelity.

Potential topics for discussion in the seminar include:
• Quantum error correction
• Quantum algorithms for linear systems of equations
• Quantum machine learning
• Hybrid classical-quantum computers
• Quantum approximate optimization algorithm
• Quantum sensing
• Quantum cryptography
• Experience in scientific writing in English
• Basics in Calculus, Linear Algebra and Numerics
In the seminar, participants will study a current topic in this domain in-depth and give a talk (of around 20 minutes and 5 minutes discussion). To demonstrate their acquired knowledge, students are encouraged to implement a small prototype or toy model simulation.
