Data assimilation is the process of fitting dynamical systems (physical models) to observational data. As such, these algorithms are a key component in numerical weather prediction systems, which are used, for example, at the ECMWF. We will understand the problem statement and evaluate several solution strategies. To implement these algorithms, we will work with the paradigm of differentiable programming.

After an initial meeting, the seminar will be held as a one week block seminar in the middle of the semester with meetings in the early evening.
Prior exposure to relevant fields of applied mathematics such as linear algebra, mathematical analysis, numerical optimization and probability theory/statistics.

Programming experience with Python for scientific computing (numpy, scipy).
Upon completion of this module, students will have acquired knowledge about the problem of data assimilation and various solution strategies.
